Digital Camera recommendations?
Main Post:
Hi everyone! I need help with camera recommendations, summary is at the end. My problem is I want my pictures to have that digital camera effect/vibe which I don’t think you can get with just your phone. However I just bought a new Iphone 16 base and with my budget I can’t afford to buy a camera for $1000 so I’m looking for a budget friendly digital camera that can still give me the same type of pictures. Before anyone comes at me for this, I’ve seen many people say that it’s not about the camera but it’s about the settings. That’s why I came here for help. I initially wanted to ask about the kodak pixpro FZ55 but then I saw another post on here and people told OP it’s the worst camera. So I’m a little confused. Anyways I answered the questionnaire but keep in mind I actually have no knowledge about cameras but did my best to answer because people here are professionals.
- Budget: If it’s brand new I would say between 300 or 400 USD. If used I could go for maximum of 300 usd.
- Country: Sweden
- Condition: Preferably new but used is fine.
- Type of Camera: point and shoot, (compact camera)
- Intended use: Photography, self portraits and capturing surroundings.
- If photography; what style: landscape, portrait, street, beaches
- If video what style: I don’t intend to use it for vlogging so it’s not a priority.
- What features do you absolutely need: compact digital camera with a built-in flash, good low-light performance, and a sensor that provides better image quality than the IPhone 16 (no visible pixelation)
- What features would be nice to have: Flip up screen for self portraits.
- Portability: Pocketable or small bag. It should be compact and lightweight for easy carrying as I will use It mostly when traveling.
- Cameras you're considering: Moreso cameras I want but can’t get because of the price or availability in Sweden. You can find most of these on Ebay but they resell for so much more than the original price.
Canon G7X – known for it’s good image quality, especially in low light, and it’s compact size. The flip-up screen is also useful for self-portraits, and it has a decent lens with a good balance of zoom.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III – good low-light performance, 1-inch sensor, and built-in viewfinder. It’s compact,
Panasonic Lumix DMC LX15 – great for low-light situations. It’s compact size, image quality,
Panasonic Lumix TZ200 – 1-inch sensor and a good optical zoom range. It's compact, offers solid performance in low light, built-in flash, which is one of my key requirements.
Panasonic Lumix DMC LX100 – image quality, particularly in low light, built in flash.
Canon Powershot SX740 HS – good zoom capabilities in a compact form, decent balance of features, built in flash.
- Cameras you already have: I have none and I’m a beginner so I don’t actually know anything about cameras, which is why I’m making this post.
- Notes: I just want the pictures to turn out crisp and for reference I’ll post some photos taken with different cameras I found on TikTok. I’m not too concerned about technical specs like having a 1-inch sensor, as long as the camera can deliver the kind of photos I’m looking for.
SUMMARY: I mostly want to use the camera for self portraits and photography and capturing the surrounding as I want to use it on my vacation. I’m looking for the same results that you get with the canon g7x (crips, good low light performance) and built in flash. Budget: $300-$400, used is also fine. Honestly as long as the camera is better than my iphone 16 OR can get me the digital camera photos effect. I’m not too concerned about technical specs like having a 1-inch sensor, as long as the camera can deliver the kind of photos I’m looking for. I’d also like to clarify what I mean by good low light performance, I’m referring to using the flash (so the images aren’t pixelated even with the flash), such as for taking pictures at the beach during sunset etc.
Top Comment: All you need is a beach, an atractive young lady, and a flash. Beside this, any camera will do. There is nothing interesting or special about the pictures shown there. There are not even good portraits (unless you are into the flat and waxy look that a tiny flash directly coming from the camera give to people.) 3rd one seems to mentions the G7X that is on your list in the text, start from there maybe?
digital camera recommendations
Main Post:
hey y’all, first of all i’d like to disclose that i know absolutely nothing about cameras. it’s my birthday soon, and i want to take pictures like these (pics attached), and i’m also looking into using the camera later on for taking pictures of other things (random). could anybody please give me recommendations of digital cameras which aren’t too pricey or hard to use? i’m a beginner, so i don’t mind one which doesn’t have very advanced features. thank you!! (PS: got the pics off of pinterest. also, i’ve heard a lot of people say that these kind of cameras aren’t widely available anymore. if so, are there any good alternatives? thanks again!)
Top Comment: Every picture you posted is being viewed on the rear LCD screen. Cameras aren’t designed to display the photo with full quality on the screen. It’s just a quick preview before you transfer it to something with a proper screen (phone, computer, etc.) so if you want to take pictures that look like that, I’m guessing you’re looking for something low quality by today’s standards. I think any early to mid 2000s digital camera with a built in flash would be what you’re looking for. Anything with a single digit megapixel. The Sony DSC-W220 in the second picture has 12.1 megapixels, but again, the photos will look better than they do in the preview pics you are fond of. And whoever said older digital cameras aren’t widely available anymore hasn’t heard of eBay. Look there. If you like Canon, look for older Canon Powershot cameras. If you like the Sony, look for older Sony Cybershot cameras (both cameras in your pics are a powershot and cybershot). There’s so much more but half of photography is learning what you like. You just have to start somewhere. Good luck and happy early birthday!
What is an affordable digital camera that yall find reliable?
Main Post:
Im trying to take up photography so I hardly know anything but what do you think would be good to start out that has good portability? My budget is 200$ or less (not alot I know but it's the best I can do)
Top Comment: If you're talking about modern, mirrorless camera bodies: you're pretty much going to get a high quality, reliable camera body regardless of what you go for these days. I genuinely can't remember the last actual dud that was released by any of the main manufacturers. There are a handful that are probably below par: the cheapest of the Sony vlog-focused cameras (like the ZV-1F) are pretty poor, the Z30 from Nikon isn't great, I think the APS-C mirrorless offerings from Canon are a massive waste of money, because there's only about 4 native lenses for them, and they're all kinda crap. The main reason that there's nothing actually objectively bad out there though is that the entry level of cameras has to compete with what you can achieve with a smartphone. And phones are pretty incredible these days, so the bar for what's actually going to be good enough to sell is pretty high compared with 15-20 years ago. So if you're looking to start out in photography, you probably want to come it it from the perspective of what it is about photography that interests you, and what kinds of things you feel like you might value most when it comes to a camera system. Are you looking to have a camera with you while you're traveling? If so you're going to value versatility and portability pretty highly. So maybe looking at some cameras in the Micro four-thirds family, from Panasonic or Olympus/OMSystems might be good. Are you interested in the process and skill and feel going out and shooting? A lot of people really like Fujifilm for their beautiful, classically styled camera bodies and the very physical, tactile experience of having specific dials for all your settings. Are you looking to get into a more professional space; maybe shooting product photography or portraits, and/or you're really after getting the best image quality out of your camera. If so, you might want to look into going straight into a full-frame system from Sony, Nikon or Canon. Professional photographers will typically shoot on full-frame cameras (though APS-C and M4/3 platforms can absolutely be used professionally as well), often because it gives them greater creative control over their work and typically offers the widest range of different lenses, different bodies for different types of photography and professional services that they may need. Are you just swimming in money, and you want a fashion accessory that makes you look classy? Then Leica is the way to go. (Mostly joking, Leica makes incredible cameras, but they're absurdly expensive, and it's absolutely not a platform to be starting out on unless you've got ungodly amounts of disposable income). Typically, I'd recommend Micro 4/3 as a platform for people starting out with photography. Small, well featured camera bodies (typically with things like fantastic image stabilization), and a really good election of small, cheap, high-quality lenses is a pretty winning combination. However, there haven't really been any really good entry level bodies in the M4/3 space for a number of years now. The Olympus EM10iv is good, but it's a few years old now, and OMSystems, the company that now owns the brand haven't put out a new entry level camera since they've been in control, even though they've made some amazing mid and flagship level bodies in that time. Panasonic has put some great high end bodies (G9ii is a banger), but a lot of their efforts have been on their full frame bodies recently. Because of that, I'm tending to recommend either Sony's APS-C cameras, which are absolutely brilliant, or Fujifilm for people wanting to get in to photography these days. The Sony A6xxx series can be a little confusing to navigate the models for, but the newer models are the A6400, 6600 and 6700, with the bigger number being the more full-featured (and expensive) cameras. For Fuji, the X-series is what you're looking at, with the X-T30ii being their 'entry' photo focused body, the X-S20 being their more video-focused one, and then their X-T4/5 being their 'flagship' photography bodies, and the X-H2 series being their 'flagship' everything-but-more-video-focused bodies. Before pulling the trigger on anything, I'd strongly recommend going to a physical camera store and getting your hands on the camera/lens combinations that you've got your eye on. Make sure you like the look and like how it feels in hand. That'll make a bigger difference than the performance of the camera body, because if it feels good to use, you're going to have a much, much better time shooting with it. TL;DR- I love M4/3 for starting out, but Sony APS-C or Fujifilm are probably better options these days.
Recommendations for a digital camera !
Main Post: Recommendations for a digital camera !
Top Comment: this response is gonna be long, so apologies in advance. if you’re one upping from your phone and you just want to take good holiday snaps, any compact digi that’s 16mp+ will give you results that feel vintagey and filmey but slightly elevated results. you can easily get a 16mp digi for under £50 on ebay/fb marketplace. if you want something that feels that much better, go for a 20mp digi camera. on ebay they’re slightly pricier, around £100+ but they produce really cute results. if you want suggestions, id mainly search in: canon ixus / elph - these are SO good. if you want 20mp plus, look at models that are ixus 177 and above. i got my best friend the ixus 180 for her grad and the results were gorgeous canon powershow sx - these are also really good. i’d recommend going for sx500 and above, but older models work fine. the sx740 hs doesn’t produce as crisp results but it’s such a good holiday camera as it gives such a warm dreamy effect (in my opinion) canon powershot g series - the g7x is the one that’s most known but is p much sold out everywhere. it’s a professional digi but it’s popular for a reason, if you have the budget and can get your hands on one, i’d defo recommend kodak pixpro - the fz45/fz55 again are super viral, and produce VERY good results. nikon coolpix - i have the A100 and i LOVE IT. i really should sell it on but it produces the CUTEST of pictures, i’m so attached to it. it gives such a vintagey feel, whenever we go to a social gathering it’s a must that it’s taken. it’s not as good with landscapes / scenery (but it producers good enough results) but the selfies it takes are SO CUTE. i’d also maybe consider anything s3500 and above, but other models work just as well. happy to send some examples on dm of what it’s like. sony cybershot dsc hx/w - i LOVE sonys and the aesthetic of the hx series makes me go crazy. hx50/60v/90 are crazy and all are so good. i chickened out on buying three times and have lived to regret it. they’re also SO pretty. my main camera rn is also a sony and i LOVEEEEEE if you want to go for better scenery / landscape based shots, i’d recommend going for a bridge digi. these are more clunkier to carry on holiday but defo produce better results. they’re not as good with faces, but they make do. i’m not as familiar with as many examples, but i have the sony dsc h300, it’s 20mp and battery powered but the results were so good. it has like a 38x zoom. it gives you the feel of a professional camera without actually being a professional camera and it’s so much fun 😭😭 like it actually makes photography seem so easy and fun 🥲🥲 i’m selling mine on and already miss it so much. if you actually want to get into photography, i’d recommend going for the sony a5000, a5100 or a6000. this forces you to learn actual photography terms and actually learn photography, and makes the hobby so expensive 😭 but the results are definitely a LOT better than the stuff you get on an iphone. again happy to send results. i’m also a very early noob so if i’ve got anything wrong, redditors please correct me 😊
Is it worth buying a digital camera?
Main Post:
Hi,
TikTok has been making me think about getting a digital camera just for fun and aesthetic photos.
I always feel like my photos never look as good as real life. I’m eyeing the Canon PowerShot SX740.
For reference, I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has an amazing camera, but I still feel like my photos don’t really capture my true essence.
I don’t want to spend money on a digital camera if it’s just going to give me the same results.
Are digital cameras really worth it?
Thanks!
Top Comment: You have one of the best point-and-shoot cameras in the world available in your smartphone. So, the question is: What do you expect the camera would do differently? It's going to be less details (less MP), less sharp, slower, etc. The only thing you'll gain is the bigger zoom really. If you're not after the zoom, you'll do much (much) better if you learn how to edit your photos to your liking. Getting Lightroom (or any equivalent) and learning post-processing will do 100x more for your photography than getting an old digital camera. That is, if you're not specifically looking for the longer reach.
Are digital cameras worth it/what’s a good inexpensive one?
Main Post:
I’m a teenager (if that adds any context to this) and have recently fallen under the spell of the digital camera trend on TikTok. I am obsessed with how good all the photos look and really want some for myself, especially as I’m always travelling and think that it would get well used. But I don’t know if this is just a TikTok trend and I can get very similar photos from my iPhone, (it’s an iPhone 12).
I’ve done some looking for an inexpensive one (as I don’t have a lot of money) on places like eBay. I seem to like the Canon Ixus range? Are they any good? I’m up to any recommendations that I could find on a site like eBay or really anywhere for under $200 AUD.
Top Comment: It's a trend. Those cameras are worth $20 max. Do not waste your money just to fit in.
Digital camera recs for casual use
Main Post:
Hi folks,
I'm wanting to get my partner a digital camera for Christmas - something he's always wanted! Unfortunately I am not knowledgeable on photography at all. He'd like something "retro" (if digital can be considered retro at this point, I feel like I'm aging myself) and likes Canon cameras, but when I do a search on Ebay I am overwhelmed by choice and photography jargon.
Does anyone have recs for a simple digital camera for everyday use? He doesn't need anything too high tech, but fairly solid in image quality. He's not a photographer although enjoys tech and has more knowledge about it than me. What he likes most is capturing memories (he uses his phone and prints images aalll the time) and would like something with a bit of old-school nostalgia.
Any help would be super appreciated!
Top Comment: Watch this video - then this video Suggest Sony RX100 - based on your budget pick one. They are all great cameras. Here are the reviews of all the models
What is going on with "digital" cameras?
Main Post:
I grew up shooting film/digital but really converted fully to digital as a student and now freelance photographer. In all that time I never used any of those crappy point and shoots because there was always some prosumer body floating around my house. In the past year I've watched a trend of early 2000's cameras soar online, with teens and millenials snapping up terrible, God-Awful, beat up cameras for a "vintage" vibe. I'm not confused by the general nostalgia(I shoot a Leica M2 for petes sake), but I am curious if anyone here has been asked to shoot in that style while working. More than one person I've ran into while shooting general events has asked if I could take a "digital" photo of them, meaning taken in the style of these older P/S cameras and of course I've obliged. Now I want to hear other working photographers experiences with what this trend has done to your buisness.
For context I'm a student currently and thus shoot primarily school/youth events for money, so I run into the prime age demographic more than say a bird photographer might.
Top Comment: Blame iPhone's automatic HDR that ruined the entire generation's perception of "good picture". Modern phones all implement some sort of HDR and AI fusion that over-enhance photos to very similar levels. I guess some people, especially younger people who was born after the iPhone age, are totally fed up with such style and hated it so much, that they would rather have anything but iPhone style over-enhanced photo. The old CCD style lofi photo is very distinctively different from modern iPhone photo, so that is cool.
A good inexpensive compact/point-and-shoot camera?
Main Post:
Hi everyone, after a lot of research I decided to ask you directly because I consider you to be a reliable source. I'm looking for a compact/point-and-shoot digital camera, one of those very small ones that you can take everywhere with no problem. I was initially leaning towards a Kodak FZ55 but after reading mixed opinions I decided to ask you if there are other similar models new (I would like to avoid getting something used) and on the same price range (120 to 200 euros maximum). The use I would like to make of it is simple: to carry it with me at all times to take pictures of anything that inspires me and also record some video clips. Can any of you help me? PS I apologize for my English, I hope it is understandable :)
Top Comment: I have recently been trying to find exactly the same thing, in exactly the same price range as you mention and have come to the conclusion that the product we are seeking does not exist. Phone cameras have got to a point where they are as good or better than a camera in this range would probably be, and because so few people now require such a device because we all have phones with decent cameras, the camera manufacturers are probably quite right deeming such a device a waste of their resources and are concentrating on more premium devices in higher price brackets.
